Temperatures and sunshine
July is a month of dry heat. Afternoons run between 36 and 40 °C, nights stay warm (20-24 °C) and rain is virtually absent. During chergui spells the thermometer can pass 45 °C; the station record of 49.6 °C was set in July. The UV index peaks at 11.
Sightseeing in the heat
The golden rule: do everything before 11 am and after 6 pm. Mornings for Jardin Majorelle and the palaces; the hottest hours for the pool, a siesta, an air-conditioned museum or a hammam; evenings for the souks, Jemaa el-Fna and dinner on a terrace as the city wakes up. The covered souk alleys stay much cooler than exposed sites such as El Badi Palace.
Escaping the heat
Essaouira is the great summer refuge, with 22 °C afternoons and a strong sea breeze. The Ourika Valley and Imlil feel cooler, but watch out for afternoon storms over the Atlas, which can cause flash floods. At Oukaïmeden it is often below 25 °C.
Good to know
July is also when many Moroccans living abroad return home: airports and roads are busy. Throne Day, 30 July, is a public holiday. Hotel rates are often attractive, pool included.
