Snow almost never falls in Marrakech itself, but the High Atlas, 50 km to the south, is usually snow-capped from December to March, sometimes November to April. On clear days the white peaks are visible from the city. Oukaïmeden ski station lets you ski when there is enough snow, most often from January to March.
Seeing the snowy Atlas from Marrakech
The best views come in the morning after a weather front, when the air is washed and dry. The Menara gardens, medina rooftops and the road to Amizmiz give the finest panoramas. On our site the live sky shows white peaks when our data indicate snow at altitude.
Skiing at Oukaïmeden
Oukaïmeden, 75 km from Marrakech, is Africa’s highest ski station: a plateau at around 2,650 m with lifts climbing above 3,200 m. Snow varies enormously from season to season: some years offer several weeks of skiing, others almost none. Equipment can be hired on site; follow our forecast to spot snowfall.
Imlil and Toubkal in winter
In Imlil snow often whitens the village and trails. Climbing Toubkal then becomes a mountaineering route: crampons, an ice axe and a guide are essential. Lower hikes remain possible in good weather with proper clothing.
Mountain roads
After heavy snowfall the Oukaïmeden road and the Tizi n’Tichka pass (towards Ouarzazate) can close for a few hours or slow down. Check before you go and allow extra time.
