Imlil, a Berber village at 1,740 m and 1.5 hours from Marrakech, is the starting point for High Atlas hikes and the ascent of Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. It averages 7-8 °C cooler than Marrakech, and far colder on the summit.
Climate in layers
In Imlil summers are pleasant (25-28 °C in the afternoon) and winters cold, with frequent frost and, some years, snow down to the village. On Toubkal summit the temperature is on average 15 °C lower than in Imlil: it freezes at night almost all year and the wind makes it feel even colder. We show both the village and the summit forecasts.
When to hike
April to June and September to October offer ideal conditions for day treks and climbing Toubkal without mountaineering kit. In summer start very early: storms often break in the afternoon. From December to March Toubkal becomes a winter climb: crampons, an ice axe and an experienced guide are essential.
Climbing Toubkal
The ascent usually takes two days with a night at the refuge (around 3,200 m). A licensed mountain guide is strongly recommended and often required locally. Watch the summit wind: above 50 km/h walking on the ridges becomes hard and dangerous.
Weather tips
Even in summer bring a fleece and a windproof. Start walking at first light, come down before 2 pm in storm season and check our “Atlas hike” index the day before.
