The Ouzoud Falls, about 110 metres high, lie in the Middle Atlas 150 km north-east of Marrakech (2 h 45 by road), at around 1,000 m. It is a little cooler than the city and greener, with Barbary macaques in the olive trees.
Climate and flow
The flow of the falls depends on rain and snowmelt: it peaks from February to May and is lower at the end of summer. Temperatures are close to Marrakech, a few degrees lower, with cooler nights. In summer the site is still hot in the afternoon, but the shade of the olive trees and the spray help.
The visit
A path leads down to the foot of the falls, with steps that can be slippery near the water: shoes with good grip are recommended. You can cross by boat at the base of the falls. Barbary macaques roam freely: do not feed them.
When to go
Spring is the best season: powerful falls, green countryside and mild temperatures. In summer go early to avoid heat and weekend crowds. In winter days are cool but bright; avoid days of heavy rain, when paths turn muddy.
