A hot-air balloon flight in Marrakech depends above all on the dawn wind: you need calm surface wind (below roughly 15 km/h), no rain, no storms and good visibility. These conditions come together on most mornings from October to May. The operator always makes the final call, the evening before or at dawn.
How a flight works
Flights usually take off around sunrise north of the Palmeraie or in the Agafay area, 30-45 minutes from Marrakech. Pick-up is therefore very early, between 5 and 6 am depending on the season. The flight usually lasts around an hour, over villages and olive groves with the Atlas ahead.
Weather criteria
- Surface wind: calm to light. Above 15-20 km/h inflating and landing become tricky and flights are often cancelled.
- Rain and storms: no-go.
- Fog and low cloud: they cut visibility and can delay or cancel take-off.
- Heat: in summer hot air gives the balloon less lift, so flights are very early.
Our “Dawn balloon flight” index
Every day we calculate a score from 0 to 100 from the wind forecast at sunrise over the Agafay area, low cloud, fog and rain. An “Ideal” score means forecast conditions are favourable; it does not replace the operator’s decision. Check it the day before on tomorrow’s weather.
Which season
From October to April dawns are often calm and the air crystal clear, with a snowy Atlas in winter; it is cold at take-off, so bring a warm jacket. In spring the countryside is green. In summer flights still run very early, before the heat.
